The Glasgow Modified Alcohol Withdrawal Scale (GMAWS) is a validated clinical tool used to assess the severity of alcohol withdrawal symptoms and guide benzodiazepine administration. It is particularly useful in hospital settings to support symptom-triggered therapy, minimizing over- or under-treatment. The scale evaluates five parameters: orientation, agitation, tremor, auditory hallucinations, and sweating. Each parameter is scored from 0 to 2, with higher scores indicating more severe withdrawal. A total score ≥ 4 generally indicates the need for pharmacologic intervention.
