The Sano score is a clinical calculator used to predict the unresponsiveness to Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy in patients with Kawasaki disease. Kawasaki disease is a condition that primarily affects children and causes inflammation in the walls of medium-sized arteries throughout the body. The Sano score is particularly useful in identifying patients who are at high risk of being resistant to IVIG therapy, which is the standard treatment for Kawasaki disease. This allows for early intervention with additional or alternative treatments to prevent complications such as coronary artery aneurysms. The Sano score includes variables such as age, days of illness, platelet count, and levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), sodium, and C-reactive protein (CRP). It is not applicable to patients without Kawasaki disease or those who have already started IVIG therapy.
