Post-thrombotic syndrome

The Villalta score is a clinical calculator used for the diagnosis and severity assessment of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), a long-term complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This scoring system is applicable to patients who have had a DVT and are at risk of developing PTS. The Villalta score evaluates five patient-reported symptoms (pain, cramps, heaviness, paresthesia, and pruritus) and six clinician-observed signs (edema, skin induration, hyperpigmentation, venous ectasia, redness, and pain during calf compression). Each symptom and sign is scored from 0 (none) to 3 (severe), and the scores are summed to give a total score ranging from 0 to 33. A score of 5 or more confirms the diagnosis of PTS, and higher scores indicate more severe disease.
